Verdure

(vûr'jər) The lush greenness of flourishing vegetation; Vigorous greenery,
a fresh or flourishing condition.

Dont you just love the  lime green colour that buds on the branches in the spring–signalling that a long winter is over and the warm summer nights are nearing? Or have you been amazed at how a palm tree can survive in the dessert using its stature to reach up for sunlight and it’s many branches to collect and retain water?

Signs of spring!

My interest and enjoyment in horticulture gives me appreciation for scriptures that speak of new growth and abundant life because I understand the amount of TLC it takes to grow something, nourish it and keep it flourishing.  One of my favorite scripture passages on this is Psalm 92 in the amplified Bible.

It is a good and delightful thing to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises [with musical accompaniment] to Your name, O Most High,
To show forth Your loving-kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness by night…
12 The [uncompromisingly] righteous shall flourish like the palm tree [be long-lived, stately, upright, useful, and fruitful]; they shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon [majestic, stable, durable, and incorruptible].
13 Planted in the house of the Lord, they shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 [Growing in grace] they shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap [of spiritual vitality] and [rich in the] verdure [of trust, love, and contentment].
15 [They are living memorials] to show that the Lord is upright and faithful to His promises; He is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

 We can be full of sap (although it sounds like an insult!) and VERDURE (of trust, love and contentment). Even in the dry spells of our lives (waiting over a year for a referral!) we can be well-rooted and sustained like a palm, oak, or banyan tree. Trusting. Content.

“This Banyan Tree was planted in April, 1873, and marked the 50th Anniversary of Christian missionary work in Lahaina. The tree was imported from India and was only 8 ft tall. It now stands over 60 feet high, has 12 major trunks in addition to a huge core. It stretches over a 200-foot area and shades 2/3 of an acre. Caring members of the community carefully maintain the symmetrical shape of the Banyan Tree. It is one of the largest Indian Banyan trees in the world.” (www.hawaiiweb.com) ~ That’s ˆ me!~

I’m not saying it is easy to weather the heat (long wait times, uncertainly, etc…), but it is possible if we keep looking up. Do we really believe that God is able to accomplish his will in and through our lives? Ask God to help you trust in his faithfulness.

Do you often find yourself comparing your situation with those around you and wishing you were at a different stage in life? The apostle Paul says we are “to be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you who are in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

As Alexander Pope said it,

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest.

Cheers,
